Moving to United Kingdom?

A practical checklist from AANSU UK for NSU alumni arriving in United Kingdom for work, study or family, put together by alumni who made the same move.

A note from the UK committee:

Moving to the UK? Ask us about BRP collection, opening a bank account, NHS GP registration, and the best-value student areas in London and other cities.

Your arrival checklist

  1. Before you fly

Keep your passport, visa, offer letter and academic certificates in your hand luggage, with scanned copies in the cloud. Register with AANSU UK before you land so we can welcome you.

  2. Your first week: ID and tax

Collect your BRP or set up your UKVI eVisa account, and apply for a National Insurance number if you will work.

  3. Money and a phone

Open a UK bank account (many banks accept a university or employer letter and your eVisa share code). Get a local SIM or eSIM early, because many services need a local number.

  4. Find a place to live

Use trusted sites, never pay a deposit before viewing (in person or by video call) and read your tenancy agreement carefully. Ask alumni which areas suit your budget and commute.

  5. Healthcare

Register with a local NHS GP surgery as soon as you have an address; you do not need to wait until you are ill.

  6. Getting around

Get a contactless card or Oyster for London, and look at a 16-25 or 26-30 Railcard for cheaper train travel.

  7. Work and study

Update your CV to the UK two-page format and check whether your qualifications need a UK ENIC statement.

  8. Connect with alumni

Come to a chapter event, join a members' meeting and search the alumni directory for NSUers in your city. We can pair you with an alumni buddy.

  9. Stay safe

Save the local emergency number and the contact details of the nearest Bangladesh High Commission or Embassy. Keep your family informed of your address.
